In storytelling, escapism and critical engagement are not mutually exclusive.
Hi! My name is Zorah Starr (obviously). Welcome to my corner of the internet! A bit about me, since that is why you clicked on this tab: I’m a queer Black author who has a very complicated relationship with gender. I use they/them and occasionally she/her pronouns. I am a person of many interests, especially of the nerdy variety. If I’m not writing, I’m reading or playing tabletop rpgs with my friends. I definitely grew up as the ‘weird girl,’ and sometimes I still feel that way.
But back to business! I’ve been writing since before I can even remember, and being an author has been a lifelong goal of mine. I started off writing stories in school notebooks, transitioned to sites like Wattpad and Quotev, and the rest is history! I have also published some poems and short stories.
Fantasy is my absolute favorite genre, both to write and to read! For many people, Fantasy is a way to escape the real world. For others, Fantasy is a way to critique our world through an, ahem, fantastical lens. I say it’s both! You can escape into a new world and still engage in commentary. It’s my firm opinion that one does not negate the other. My main goal in writing is to create fantastical worlds that readers can disappear into while simultaneously exploring real-life issues.
Well, that’s me! If you were hoping to learn more? I love cats, I don’t have an appendix, and I’m very proud of my West Indian and African American heritage. Still want to know more? Stick around! I’ll yap (type?) your ear off.
